PIETA
Pieta, marble, 22" high.
This early work by C. Edmund Sullivan reflects his study of Michelangelo. In particular it is a syntheses of two of the old master's Pietas. The first, the famous one in Saint Peter's, in Rome, was carved when Michelangelo was twenty four years old, where the corpus of Christ lays horizontally on Mary's lap. The second is the Pieta Rondanini, in the Sforza Castle, in Milan. It is a vertical composition, is gaunt and has a soaring spiritual quality. The eighty nine year old sculptor was working on it six days before he died.
Sullivan's Pieta has a reverse S curve, vertical composition. The shared tilt of the mother's head with that of her dead son presents a strong emotive force.
